New Computer System - Getting Started Back Up

Had to build a new computer system. Having said that, that meant all my configuration work that I previously did was gone. Should have had it backed up, but uh, I'm a moron and did not, so I am going to try and catch back up to where I was and continue on with this project. Hopefully by the time the holidays are over I can get started on the machine itself and have some things to report here in the blog.

August 12, 2007 - "Need to pick back up on this"

Been real busy the last several months and have not really had time for this project. I hope to be back in the swing of it, probably have to re-learn all that I have learned so far. Stay tuned.

February 15, 2007 - "Freedo Setup Problems"

Spent most of my time trying to figure out a problem setting up Freedo (3DO emulator) to run with Mamewah. In order for Freedo to be used with Mamewah, you must use a wrapper provided by jcrouse, called freedowrapper. I was getting errors when freedowrapper was trying to run so it would not work. After spending most valuable time being a moron, I found out that the problem was that I did not have .NET installed on my system. Once I installed .NET everything was fine.

February 7, 2007 - "ROM Maintenance"

Today I took a look at my ROMS collection and realized I am several versions behind with MAME. I would like to be as updated as possible. I have aquired the updates up to version 0.111 and should be receiving those shortly. I know version 0.112 was released today, but I can't get my hands on those ROMS yet.I was at version 0.89. I plan to run MAME of course, I will also be running various console emulators as well (Atari 2600, Intellivision, Colecovision, NES, SNES, N64, Sega Master System, Sega Genesis, Sega Saturn, Dreamcast, Playstation, and any others I can think of). I will be putting Daphne for the laser disc games. Right now I am sorting through and finding which are playable on my control panel, I do not want unplayable games on the machine taking up space. I am sure by the time I finish this project there will be several more versions of MAME released, I will try to keep up as I go.

By the way, today is the 10th anniversary of MAME.

I have also been contemplating using light guns. I really like the light gun games for the most part. I have to do a little research on the BYOAC Forums on this subject as to best options.

I am going to add buttons on the side of the control panel for pinball also. I have been messing with Visual Pinball, but I have found Future Pinball and I kind of like it a little better. I may just throw them both on there for the heck of it.

I am going to change my MameWah layout also, I linked my control panel image to the layout and it looked like crap in that small box, so a revision is going to take place.

February 6, 2007 - "Mamewah Layout"

Today I created the layout for the frontend I will be using for the cab. I will be using Mamewah, which seems to be one of the better and most configurable frontends. Here is a screenshot of the frontend layout I created.

Eventually the box with the control panel in it will have an image of my control panel with the appropriate controls indentified for the game. If you have questions about the layout or help with the layout designer please feel free to ask.

February 5, 2007 - "In the beginning"

Welcome to my tangle with building an arcade cabinet. This is my second project, the first being the Jam Box Jukebox I learned a few lessons from that project and will try to apply them to this one. Main lesson learned - FINISH THE PROJECT BEFORE USING IT!!!! Because I did not follow this advise on my first project, well let's just say it never got finished. This will be a slow moving project, my job keeps me away for 2 weeks every month.

Control Panel Overlay Design

I have decided that I am pretty much going to design the control panel and build the cabinet around this, and the 27" TV I will be using as the monitor. Fooling around in photoshop I came up with this design. Anyone who has been around the BYOAC forums knows this is based on Knievel's control panel designs. I used it because it is neat and pretty much accomplishes everything I need. The control panel measurements will be 35" x 16".
